layer masks in PS 7.0

I want to use layer masks to hide parts of a vector shape over text.

I selected the text (on separate text layer)
then added layer mask to vector layer.

When I paint the vector layer with brush (using white or black, neither works), and deselect the text layer nothing happens.
Please send help with tips on using layer mask button on bottom of layers pallette in photoshop 7.0.

I always assumed layer masks only work on raster images, not vector shapes. What is the point of having a vector shape if you are going to apply raster transparency to it? Convert the vector shapes to raster images and then attempt layer masking.
