Some of my pictures when brought up on photoshop 7 will show the image is locked and in the layer name it will say index. How do I unlock this layer?

Image>Mode>RGB Colour

Then double click the layer in the layers palette.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I after converting to RGB and double clicking the layer you must hit the enter key to unlock the layer.

I don't have PS running at the moment to check.

mscallisto has a point. YOu can also rename it to other than index and it'll remove the locking.

When you double-click the layer, a dialog appears asking you set a few basic layer options, such as name. Usually, you can just click OK (or hit enter) because the defaults are good enough for general use.

I'm not sure what you mean about renaming it, though. This is a color mode issue. The only way to rename it is to change the color mode first, which will rename it automatically anyway (usually to 'Background'). You can still change the name back to index if you want, it doesn't affect the functionality.

dont get me wrong, double cliking and then enter will work just fine. Usually in photoshop, the image openned is usually set as a background which locks it. In this case, the background is index since it is in CMYK mode. I usually just rename it but that's just me.

No, the image is in Indexed Colour mode, thats why it says Index. Not CMYK.

Right click the layer and go to duplicate layer, then trash the index.
