Hi I just got Photoshop 7 (I had 6.0). I was trying to make some simple shapes, each on a separate layer. I tried to change the color with the paint bucket on one of the layers but got the error message "could not use paint bucket because the content of the layer is not directly editable" Is this a change from 6.0? I've never had it come up before.

I also noticed that in the layers palette that the entire icon (of the layer) is totally red, or green, or whatever instead of showing the shape (square, circle, checkmark).

Does anyone know how to correct this? Perhaps it is a setting in preferences that I can't find?

Thanks,

Jude

If the layer is locked (you will see the padlock on the layer)window .... doubleClick the layer and hit the enter key to unlock.

I should have read the post better..

If your mode is not RGB, that may be a problem.

Also if it's a background layer, doubleClick the layer on the palette to rename it to Layer 0, to allow editing.

Thanks for trying to answer my question :)

1. The layer(s) are not locked
2. It is not the background layer
3. Image mode is RGB

Could it have something to do with color paths? or channels? Or mask? Whatever it is, Adobe opened up with that "preference" as this is the first thing I've tried to do with the new program.

Thanks,

Jude

Can you reset the preferences, sometimes they just jet messed up. see my post on thread229-1028116

Thanks again,

Resetting preferences did not help.

I'll keep playing with the different options - maybe something will work :)

I appreciate your time,

Jude

I'll keep looking too but if you can't find an answer can you try a re-install?

Thanks for all your help! It seems to be working now - though I don't have the slightest idea of what I did! I didn't reinstall it or change color modes.

I did open some past work that I'd done in 6.0, played with that a bit. Closed it. Then, started another new one. Now, it's on the right track!

I appreciate your input! (I never knew about the reset preferences before)

Thanks again,

Jude

you were just in the channels pallete by mistake thats all when you closed and reopened the program it reset which pallete you were looking at if it happens again all you need to do is click on the layers tab and make sure the layer your working in is active(eye icon is showing)
