Good Morning

I am working on my first personal project (enough to work for
others...) but the only one thing where I'm lacking experience
is the legal side of a web project.
I mean: do I absolutely have to display a long page of warnings
(disclaimer, etc...) and legal information to protect myself from
being taken in court by some stupid individual/company or could
I design the project without taking care of doing such an hassle?
If yes, do I have to pay a lawyer to get the job done?
Can I do it myself quite easily?
I have no experience in this field and I would be grateful to the
one who will teach me a few things on this subject from his personal
experience.
Note that my future web site won't be illegal at all and won't be
involved into any copyright fraud. I can't tell too much, but it will
be a little bit similar to a directory of web sites. There will be free
services and payable services as well.

Thanks for the help.

Hi,

Firstly display a copyright notice, definitly, and if you want create a copyright page with a paragraph of info, not so necessary but i'd do ity anyway.

Not necessary but useful::if you expect a lot of visitors then you probably should write a disclaimer of liability. Its easy to do, just do a Google search for disclaimer etc and you will find a ton of info on it. you can then compile your own.

Not necessary but useful::You might also want to write a privacy statement, maybe a short one to let users know if you collect personal info from cookies etc.

You dont need to hire a lawyer just do a bit of investigation and make your own. Keep it simple and straight forward!

hello Cian.

Thanks for the feedback.
There is one more question though: what do you mean by
"Not necessary but useful"?
Does it mean that not doing it won't bring any trouble
to me? Have you an idea of what kind of trouble I could
get?
Also, how can I be sure that the disclaimer warning
I might get from somewhere else can really protect me
on a legal side?

Thanks again!

Hi,
what I meant by that was that these things are not always necessary, but of course it depends on what type of content you are presenting. Is your content something visitors will use as reference or rely on? If so then its probably more important that you have these? If its a personal/self promotional site then its probably not important.

I honestly dont know how well these things protect you, sorry, hopefully one of the others might shed some light on that.

I think you might be worrying too much about this, but then again what sort of site are you making, if you dont mind me asking?

Hey,
if its something you are worried about put your mind at rest by getting a lawyers advice, but personally I wouldn't spend money on this unless its really necessary. No point paying lots of dosh if its something you can probably do yourself.
And if its not so important for your site I dont mind spending time writing a few ideas for you.

I can't unveil exactly what will be the purpose
of the web site, but here is a short description.

It will be a little bit like a directory of websites like yahoo but with a big difference.
I will sell a service to companies and a different service
will be free for individuals.

Sorry if it isn't clear enough :)

Concerning the ideas, what do you have in mind? You mean ideas about legal stuff don't you?

Have a good day!

Hi,

Ok, IMO I think you should put a bit of effort into preparing these "documents" just to cover yourself! Perhaps getting the advice of an expert might be a good idea.

By ideas I meant I could help you with some "templates" or a basic framework for these "documents" just to get you started. But I dont have much experience with these, I just investigated them for one of my sites last year.

Hi Sleidia,

Can I also mention something off topic??

When cross posting, could you please mention this in both posts?

Just a simple line saying "I have also posted this question in thread84-262409" allows us to check there so that we are not posting the same answers as someone else..

Hope this helps Wullie
