launching movies that fade in and out

I have a series of thumbnail images that when clicked need to first fadeout the current larger image and then fadein the new one. I know how to script a simple fadein or fadeout, but not how to put all this together. If someone has any advice or can point to a tutorial, I would really appreciate it. thanks,
