Launching An Application From A Link

I have created several links on our site that point to various files (Word, Excel, etc.) on a server. For some reason, users used to be able to automatically open the parent application when clicking on the link at our web site, but now, they are only able to download and save the file.

To my knowledge, we have not changed anything in our page, but certain parameters on our firewall have changed recently. Does anyone know if this problem might be related to a security issue (i.e. tcp ports)?
