Launch ActiveX Exe file & try to end program & receive Switch/To Retry

I am working on a program that launches an ActiveX Exe (with events) program that calls EAI to retrieve data. The reason for the ActiveX Exe is to avoid locking the keyboard. The user should be free to do anything after launching the ActiveX Exe, including ending the program. The reason to use ActiveX Exe instead of a regular Exe file to be able to receive an event notification that the data retrieval is complete. The problem is that when we try to end the program, we receive the "Component Request Pending" Switch To/ Retry message. Does anyone know how to avoid this?
