Hi everyone,

I have just rebooted a NT 4.0 Server and it has come up with an error saying that the last known good menu file is corrupt or missing... I tried to repair but no luck.... Does anyone know how I can get my server back without a total rebuild???

Thanks in advance for all help

Katriona..... please be gentle I'm new to all this :)

Oh dear. If the repair doesn't work you'll almost certainly have to reinstall NT. I've never been able to successfully recover from one of these errors.
Sorry!

You could do a parallel NT installation and restore the registry files from a tape backup. Here's how to do that:

1) Reinstall Windows into a separate directory, say 'WINNTR'.

2) Restore backed up copies of the system's registry hives found in the %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\Config subdirectory. So don't restore them to the 'WINNTR' location on the fresh install, restore them to the location that the production server used to keep it's files in.

You can get these file from either the compressed copies on the ERD, or from a tape backup of the registry, or, if recent enough, copy them from the %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\Repair directory in the afflicted system directory.

If Windows is stored on a FAT partition, you could restore the files using another computer and copying the registry hive files into the directory above.
