I am trying to add a "good ole" hp iii to my win 98se system.
I can print font pages, test pages and the one with the lines about 1/8" apart from the control panel on the printer(and the secret side panel).
I have switched 1284 cables around and the ones on the printer work with my Cannon printer.
I replaced the power cord for the printer.
I reloaded drivers from win 98se cd and then downloaded the update from hp web site.
Printer folder in the control panel sees it.
When I hit the print button it starts up and spits out 3-4 pages with usually one line of jibberish accross the top.
Am I missing something obvious? Help - please!

Get to boot up DOS and try printing from there. Should define whether it is driver or hardware.
All of your test pages are for the engine, don't evaluate the serial or parallel ports, at least from the cable side. Ed Fair

Thanks for the suggestion - I did that as:

A:\ dir > prn did nothing
but
A:\ dir > lpt1 printed the directory of the floppy

further suggestions? Thanks!!

How about deleting the III from printers and install it as II. II drivers will work with it. May be the same driver, if so , then probably defective.
I've never used the HP drivers. Everything I have works right off the CD. Ed Fair

That crossed my mind as I had to do that with a 5/4 driver to get the 5 to work. That was on a Win95 network installation.
I did uninstall the iii driver and installed the ii driver from Win98 CD and got the same result. It appears that the same driver update is offered from the HP web site for the ii and iii, but I did re-download it. Thought about seeing if Microsoft had any updates...Thanks for your thoughts!

FYI - finally had to reload LPT1 driver - works like a champ! Thanks.
