I have a mixed environment of Windows 2000 Pro and XP machines. I have around 10 HP 5000 printers. 5 on one print server and 5 on another. All printers are using the latest PCL 5e drivers.

Two situations I am having. When I upgraded the drivers on the server, a few clients were unable to get the updated drivers. When they would go to print to their default printer it promted them to install the driver for that printer. I had them delete and re-add the printer and it still would not work. I had to manually remove the drivers under C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers and then re-add all the printers.

Also when printing from MS Word, it sometimes leaves a 1/4 of the page blank. It does not occure all the time, just intermident. When they send the same document a second time it prints off just fine.

Any idea's or insight on these issues I am having. The have been ongoing for quite some time know and I was hoping thy would just disappear but they have not.

Thank You

Start off by checking up on the FW revision of the JetDirect cards in the printers. Many issues regarding connectivity and print speed are solved by updated firmwares. Best thing is to use WebJetAdmin and install the Download Manager plugin to scan network for JetDirect cards that needs an update. Get the software here :

Forgot to mention one thing. When updating drivers, always remove old files completely and chose a fresh install as some disturbing .dll files might be leftover causing trouble. Also pick a PCL 5e point and print bundle driver for installation on server especially in your case with a mixed environment (The point and print bundle includes drivers for most OS especially for sharing out printers from a server)Also it is a known fact that Win XP drivers are not very compatible with other OS drivers and vice versa.
