Laserjet 1300 compatible in USB mode?

I bought a Laserjet 1300 which works fine when connected to the parallel port, but is useless via USB (the driver installation process always fails at the point where the computer tries to identify the new device).
Telephone support from HP failed to diagnose the problem.
The HP printer works in USB mode with other computers, and a Canon USB printer would work with my own system, suggesting a compatibility issue -- but what sort? I run a Win 2000 SP4 system with a 875P mainboard (Asus P800C Deluxe). HP casually suggested a possible incompatibility with the chipset. Has anybody touched upon this?

Are you sure that the usb ports on your machine are functioning correctly??

Yes, my usb ports are fine, all of them, and so is the printer cable, since my other printer can be connected via usb.
