I've got a table of UK post codes that has 2.4 milion entries and am getting really slow queries back from it.
it takes approx 6 seconds to return a match on a select.
the same table in sql server comes back instantly. (!)
so far i've upgraded to 7.1.3, run postmaster with -F, increased the buffers (-B) to 8192 (after increaseing shmaxm to 128 meg), upgraded the kernel to 2.4.9, kicked the server and still no performance gains. i've read the stuff about postgres performance tuning and tried most of that as well.
the server is a P2 400 with 256 meg of ram, HP kit and has always been ok.
does anyine else have experience of using large tables ?
the tables were all indexed and db vaccumed etc.
thanks in advance.
