Large print jobs restarting

Recently we have had large print jobs restarting multiple times. I think it may have started happening when we went from Netware 6.5SP2 to 6.5SP6. The printer is an HP5500 with an internal JetDirect card. We don't print large jobs on any other printer.

Today we printed the monthly statements onto pre-printed paper. There are about 450 pages and it restarted about half way through TWICE, at slightly different places but half way through.

Any suggestions?

Simon

If using the HP NDPS gateway, check the printer timeout settings and crank them up to maximum. Also see if your HP Jetdirect firmware is the latest. See that you have the latest (now unsupported) NDPS and HP Gateways installed.

If this doesn't answer your question, describe your environment in more detail - how things are configured in terms of printing environment.

If you're not using the HP gateway for that printer, do so.

personaly i prefer to use the novell gateway for everything

i'm sure there was something funny about the hp gateway after one of the recent sp's 4 i think - about not copying files or something.

and i try to stick with pcl 5 if possible
6 sucks

Wow, I'm surprised that you guys are recommending the HP Gateway. It is officially obsolete and hasn't been supported by HP for at least a couple years. I remember back about 5 years ago when I was using the HP Gateway, overall I loved it and it worked great, but I saw a lot of conflicts and instability on the server. Was happy to see the Novell gateway go mainstream and I've been using it for everything ever since.

Here's my checklist..

- Printer firmware updated (HP Download Manager facilitates this)
- Post SP6 iPrint patches
- Novell Gateway, not HP or other 3rd party. Also use the SNMP gateway, not the Port Handler (Printer Agent Convert Utility will do this with ease).
- PCL 5 Drivers whenever possible. Not PCL6.
- Verify NIC configuration on Print server and Switch, make sure they match up.

<hangs head in shame>
Glad you guys called me on that, it's been a couple of years since I created any printers. I went back and looked through my notes for the Admins and sure enough I've been requiring the Novell gateway because the HP gateway is so flakey.

I'll crawl back into my corner now... Will someone hit the lights on the way out?
</shame>
