I have an NT 4.0 workstation that is really causing me problems. It will not let me copy a file that is bigger than say 300K to or from this computer across the network. The user cannot print a large file to a network printer. I used all the diognostic tools I have (these are sparse) and the network card seems ok. I have 5 other computers just like it so I ruled out server problems. I have reinstalled the sofpaq from the Manufacturer and re-loaded all the drivers I can think of. I changed the network cable to a known cable etc. I can't switch the NIC because it is on board. I don't get any messages stating that a service didn't load. Any ideas on what to try next?

I just sent a JPG from the computer in question and it was monitored as a 5 meg file by my command workstation program. I sent the same file from my computer using the same software and it came out at 75K. Somehow it is making the files much larger than they should be.

cantwellt -

Are there any mixed files systems your working with? Like, going from compressed NTFS partition, to a FAT partition? Or vis versa?
Both hard drives are NTFS only. We do use some PCMCIA cards that are FAT 32. I tried sharing one of these. It's a type 3 pcmcia card that is really a 2.5" fat32 hard drive. It didn't work either But I did get an error message that said that the server service had not started. I checked services in the control panel, but it showed it to be started. It shows automatic.

Thanks in advance for all the help!

cantwellt-

Some other things to try/consider:

Rule out inside wiring.
Assuming the cable is CATV, have you checked the cable isn't over 320+ feet from the PC to your switch/hub? Is it possible for you to bring another PC to the workstation area, plug it in & try the same file transfer? If a PC works fine from anoter area, and not the area in question it may very well be the cabling from the outlet back to the switch/hub. Or, since you mention PCMCIA, perhaps you can take this laptop into your server room, and plug it directly into the switch/hub.

Rule out that PCMCIA card.
Grab another one and try the same file transfer.

Grab the latest Service Pack - you never know, it could work.

Hope this helps. Good Luck ~

It's not a laptop and it's sitting 10' from the server on 10baseT. We use 5 or 6 different pcmcia cards constantly downloading from digital cameras. They all work great and cause no problems on identical workstations. I'm on service pack 6a. I've tried switching cables and ports. Thanks for the response though. I really do appreciate the effort!
