Hi there

IM attempting to repair a laptop for a lady in my work!

The laptop in question is a sharp PC - GP1415

the operating system is windows XP!

now the laptop jst goes to the safemode screen every time i power it up, but the bloody enter button isnt working so i cant select anything!

im sure im being a halfwit and theres an easy solution to this, can someone please help me out and give me the answer!

Thank You

Steven

Steven, can you access the boot menu - F5 or F8 as it starts? If not, get hold of a standard PS2 (or USB) keyboard and try again - don't forget to switch it off before connecting the PS2 keyboard.

Could be you have a faulty keboard or controller. Are any others not working?

If we assume that the up and down arrows keys are working, select appropriate option and try hitting the <Ctrl>M combination of keys - this equates to <CR>.

hi again, thanks for the replys guys, there doesnt seem to be a port for a keyboard, ive tried a usb mouse, no joy, i got in 2 the bios and set it back to default, i also jst let the time run down on the sfae mode page, booted but went to a blue screen where i got stop: c000021 unknown hard error - systemroot\system32\ntdll.db

oh and the up\down arrows r not working also, im trying to do a re-install and restore but cant use the enter keys!

thanks gus

Sounds like you could have a lot of keys not working... Has anything been spilled over the keyboard I wonder? Could be the ribbon connector for the keyboard is not connecting properly. Carefully removing and reinserting this ribbon into the socket is worth trying.

I cant seem to get the back of the laptop, is there any special technique to this, ave took out about 100 screws but it still wont come off, any ideas!!

thank you!

I can't seem to find a manual for this model online - are there any more details on the underside of the machine that might help find one?

Often, the keyboard can be removed quite easily from above, sliding the furthest panel out or gently prying the edges of the keyboard up - wouldn't recommend either technique until we turn up a manual or someone with specific knowledge of this model

I haven't seen too many laptops that you can take the bottom off of (if any).

Everything comes off from the top.

I wouldn't try to open up a laptop (that has ANY value)

If you see 10 screws, that means that there are 100 more below it. There are hundreds of screws in a laptop, and most of them are slightly different.

There are genereally many layers of hardware that you have to remove one by one.

HI there guys, i can only communicate during the day as im at work! i will try & find out some more info about the make of laptop- Notebook Computer PC - GP1415

rating : 19v = (DC) 3.16A, 60W - that is all the info i have - not much but it seems like an old model!

thanks again!

Hi,
The power button strip slids to the right and lifts off under this is the screws that hold down the keyboard
remove it and then reinsert it replace the the power button strip and turn on reboot.
if all is well Then do this

to get windows running first put a xp disk into the drive
reboot hit f12 choose cdrom for boot drive then
let windows install its self until you get to
the window where it asks you to recover
it will then go to a dos window choose 1 as the drive you
want to recover it will ask for a password hit enter
at the dos prompt type in chkdsk / p
it will then check the drive for errors.
after this reboot as normal

If you still get a blue screen then the hard drive will need replacing.

Hi there

Thanks for you're intrest in my problem, oultonprk - i am unable to use the enter key, that is my main problem! i am unablwe to carry out any installations of windows due to this, ive tried attaching mice & keyboards but still no joy, any more ideas on how i culd fix this problem!

cheers

If the enter key is not working, and you are having trouble getting an external keyboard to work, is there much point in re-installing, as the machine will still be unusable.

You should be able to log into the machine without using the enter key, by using the mouse/touch pad.

If there is a USBor ps/2 port on it, you should boot the machine up, and let it install the new hardware, and then press the power button/windows key and let it shut itself down. Upon boot up, it should recognise the external keyboard, and allow you use the enter key on that.
