Here is the situation, hopefully someone can help:
We currently have a bunch of Thinkpads that use docking stations which have SCSI 160 cards in them so that we can communicate with different data collection equiptment. This is a mobile set-up and the technicians that use this are both in the vehicle and processing the data in offsite work areas so it needs to stay mobile. The IBMs are now out of date and we are shopping for a similar solution but are unable to get a new system working. Our data collection equiptment recommends to use the ultra 320 cards so we purchased an Adaptec 320 single channel SCSI card along with a Dell D600 and docking station. When we power on the Dell system, since we never see it actually POST, we never see where to enter into the SCSI BIOS however the card is recognized by Windows. When I attempt to install the provided driver it causes the system to lock up and will not boot again. I have installed the card in a desktop system with XP and have had not troubles and the card works fine therefore Adaptec says it is in the Docking station/Laptop configuration and I would have to agree. After going round and round with Dell on the issue they said basically it was not going to work as well and that I could return the equiptment if I so desired. I am now in the process of contacting a Panasonic rep to see if they can come up with a solution for me. Does anyone here have any possible ideas or solutions for this configuration? Has anyone used a SCSI card in a laptop configuration on a modern system? We have tried to use the USB to SCSI adapter but the speed of data transfer is too slow and it interferes with the data collection equiptment. The manufacturer of that equiptment said the USB adapter would definately cause problems.
