First of all the reason I am not posting this question in another forum is because Netware guys work alot more closely with the hardware than microsoft users.

Q: My company recently downsized and there are some equipment on hand. among them are a few laptops. a few heads got together and was wondering what's the difference between the laptops and the desktops (besides the obvious).
Performance wise,

can a laptop be used the same way as you would use a desktop workstation that is usually on 24/7 ? other than the ugrade flexability of the desktops, will laptops be harder to work with?

will it burn out faster?

what is the life span?

has anyone ever used it as a netware server? if so tell me about the performance.

thanks.

Ahhh, laptops usually have just as good of quality in them as PC's do, with the exception that you dont get a fancy 32 meg video card. However, you can add things like flash memory cards to them, and most come with USB ports on board. You can setup a laptop to be a Novell server as this has been done, but only for testing purposes.

Most laptops are nice becuase they are portable, that is one key benefit, and most laptops will ast 3+ years depending on the user and handling, but most are built to last.

The batteris are usually the only item that needs to be replaced from time to time as the life is usually 3 years, which is about the average life os most electronic equipment.

As long as the laptop is of good quality, I would agree with DrMarkGreen. One thing we have found though, if comparing processor to processor, ram to ram etc., laptops are not as fast. Processors are usually low voltage, etc but as far as working with them (to do your job) a standard keyboard, mouse or monitor can be added for those who think they need them, and network pc-cards come in a wide variety.

Cheers,

mark ;-)
