Laptop slows when using wireless

When im using my wireless card in my laptop at home it slows the whole machine to a crawl, eg opening notepad takes 5 minutes! internet runs fine.
As soon as I turn the card off it runs fast again.
I've tried updating the wirelss driver and the router firmware.
Using an IBM t41p laptop conecting to a netgear WGT634U

Any ideas?
