When I unplug the mains cord on my Packard BELL P4 Laptop to use it on battery power the computer keeps shuting down and restarting continuously

Well sounds like the battery or power circuit for the battery is up the duff. If its under warranty take it back to Dixons et al and politely ask them to sort it out. If it isn't then your going to have to find a friendly battery supplier who may take a return if it turns out not to be the problem.

After that then there are plenty of laptop repairers out there that should be able to offer some advice.
