Ok...my g/f has a Dell Latitude D600; we just got her son a Latitude D610. She had a dock that says it can be used with any Latitude D series laptop.

However, when I used the new D610 power adapter with the D610 in the dock, it says that the power supply is not strong enough to run the computer while docked.

So...I took the D600's power adapter and plugged it into the dock with the D610 docked. The computer ran fine, no issues that I can see.

Is this ok? Is using the D600 power adapter on the dock with the D610 docked ok? Is it bad for the laptop?

Also, what about using the D600 adapter directly with the D610?

Thanks for the help in advance! :)

Check the labels on the power adapters. They should give you dc output voltage and current ratings. The dc output voltage must be exactly the same, but you'd expect current rating (Amps) of the D600 to be higher, in view of what you've told us. Is that correct?

D610 adapter - DC output 19.5V 3.34A
D610 adapter - DC output 19.5V 4.62A

You are right.

so this is ok?

I'll assume the latter one (4.62A) is the D600... [bigsmile]
Based on the facts you've give us, I'd say the D600 with its higher current rating looks like it'll do fine for both machines. Internal circuit details may vary, but generally speaking the higher current device will be marginally less stressed and may run slightly cooler.
