I have a user with a new Toshiba laptop with W2K. It's set-up to get an IP address using DHCP. The addresses are assigned by a Webramp on network #1 and a 3Com hub/modem on the other. The laptop has the correct gateway addresses configured for each network.

Gateway #1 is 192.168.1.254
Gateway #2 is 200.200.200.189 (the ip has been changed to protect the innocent!)

When the user goes from network #1 to #2 (different locations), the laptop gets a good address assigned such as 200.200.200.50

When the user goes from #2 to #1, she gets a bad address like 167.255.34.123

I haven't checked to see it she get the exact same bad IP.

If she then re-boots, she will get a good address.

How can I get this laptop to get a good address the first time?

Are you using Profiles on either network? Does the user have a non-portable workstation on either network? Are the DHCP leases set to expire in a short period or a long period? Talk to whoever controls the DHCP server on the network where you have the problem.

No profiles. No desktop pc for this user. I'm not sure about the DHCP leases, but I don't think that this applies as no matter the time frame, if the user re-boots, she gets a good address. Also, the DHCP servers are the Webramps and I did comb through the configuration and don't recall a lease time setting. I will double check that.

Thanks,

Have you tried having a shortcut to WINIPCFG.EXE on the desktop, and having the user do a Release All before shutting down the computer? I don't have DHCP at the office, but do use it with my multi-PC setup on a cable modem at home, and the Release/Renew options are useful sometimes.

Fred,

Thanks for the tip. I'll look into this. I'm also going to install netswitcher as a trial. This software allows one to switch many network configuration settings without reboot. I'll set-up two different static IP addresses and see how this works.

I hate to get too involved with having this user interact with configuration settings and other mechanical issues as she tends to get quite frustrated with this. She's a plug in and go kind of person.

I'll let you know what the end result is.

As an aside, would you know how to run a batch file automatically on shut down? If I could do this, I could create a batch file to release the IP lease evey time she shut down.

I installed the latest version of Netswitcher and all is as well as possible. This version is much better than the one I tried a while ago.
