This question is kind of off the topic, but then again, I think it fits.
Looking to buy 2 new Laptop computers (guess the younger crowd calls them Notebook computers)for connections to RADs, NAMs, BCMs, CPs etc. Anyway, I believe I have seen adapters to run to Serial DB-9 connectors from the USB ports, but haven't found any. Most of the newer laptops are shipping without DB-9 connectors now unless specially ordered. So, I guess my question is: What is everyone else using? My old laptop is about done in and it is time to replace some equipment around here. I posted a question on the Cabling forum a couple of days ago about the adapters, and got some good information. So, what do you recommend for a new Laptop/Notebook. Price does make a difference too.

I used one of those USB to Serial adapters, honestly, I hated them. They are called port replicators. I bought it a Circuit City. My com port would always change and what now. Dell has some laptops already equipped with the Serial Connection. Also, purchase the accidental warranty from them. They will replace if you drop them. Also, if you do purchase a laptop, I recommend either XP Pro (for networking) and or Win2k Pro. I will honestly say, for testing purposes Win2K is better. Just a fact that XP stuff isnt readily available sometimes for Nortel stuff.

I use a Dell Latitude C800 PIII 1000MHz for 450 with the OS/NIC/Modem installed.

I use a PCMCIA to Serial adaptor.
I think almost all of the laptops would have at least one PCMCIA slot...at least they did last time I bought one.

2 years ago I was in a jam & I picked up my Sony w/XP (Home) but it did not have a built in serial port.(I assumed they all had them).

I am using a Belkin FSU049 USB to Serial adaptor.

Not all adaptors will work with all equipment.

This one will not work on our Wavetek- mfg told me they only got 1 type to work, Belkin didn't have any answers for me.

If I made a recommendation I would say to get a laptop with a built-in serial port,2-PCMCIA slots, 2 USB,Network,modem,maybe a fiber port,maybe a mini USB.

The last laptops that we bought were Dell 600m that has a native serial port,(and parallel port, USB ports, modem, Ethernet port and Wireless Ethernet). They have served us VERY well and I'm glad that we searched for native serial (DB9). A good utility machine.

Thanks to all for your replies.
You convinced me to stay with the native DB-9 ports for the new laptops. Don't need any new headaches.

The only other bit of info I was given from an Network Designer was that if whomever gets Dell PC's they should buy the extended warranty. He said there seems to be a higher rate of failures after the end of the warranty period than he has experienced with other manufacturers. It's only hearsay, I myself don't know that first hand though.

I recently bought a new toshiba laptop. After my dell was stolen along with my VAN and all my tools (poor me). But I have used USB to serial adapters for a couple yars now. I have never had a problem connecting to RADS, legend , magix even toshiba. As long as you connect it to the same USB port the com port should not change. Just my experience. Good LUCK
