Laptop Microphone Problem

I have a IBM ThinkPad G40 laptop P4 3.0 Ghz. I was under the impression that the lap comes with inbuilt microphone. But after going through the manual I found out that microphone is external and not inbuilt. Now can I check whether its inbuilt or external. I tried to use the recorder program and it did not show of any sign of recording.

Thanks the problem is solved it needs an external speaker I tried with an external speaker and it works fine.
