I replaced my laptop hard drive which was a fujitsu 40gb with a hitachi 160gb - but the laptop doesn't see the hard drive--i went into the bios and tried to manually input cylinders, heads, sectors -but the bios wouldn't let me adjust the sectors as high as I needed to--

i'm assuming a compatibility issue.

My old drive was a fujitsu MHT2040AT the new one is Hitachi HTS541616J9AT00 I'M guessing that the AT designation is different/incompatible with the AT00

any ideas??

my laptop is unique in that it comes with a mini usb port that allows you to plug the laptop (when powered off) into a desktop and see the laptop drive as an external drive on the desktop. When I do this you can hear the new hardware bell - but the drive never comes up - not even in the disk managemnet window ...(the same was true when I tried an adapter before installing it in my laptop)

any thoughts anyone??

If you're not able to see it when installed in your laptop, nor when just in an external hard drive adapter, connected to your desktop, I can't help but think you've just got a bad drive. Have you contacted the manufacturer about a warranty replacement, or either getting a replacement/refund from the seller of the hard drive?

Perhaps the drive is jumpered incorrectly? Compare the jumper settings of each manufacturer to see how the drives are set, i.e. Master, Device1, Cable Sel, etc. The Hitachi should be set identically.

Or as kjv1611 suggested, the drive just could be DOA...

The first drive was definitely bad--I bought a new one and was able to see and format it with my desktop-- so i'll be sending that other one back--thanks for your assistance
