I have a Dell Studio 1535 and when you power it on it gets a gray screen. It will occasionally get a picture and will sometimes work if I open and close the LCD screen. It works fine if connected to an external monitor. Can anyone tell me if it is the inverter or the LCD screen itself?

I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong) it's the inverter IF the screen is dark but you faintly see the output on the screen.
A gray screen (meaning it IS actually lit up) sounds like the LCD itself or the cable connecting the video card to the screen.
For sure, the problem is AFTER the video card.
