Laptop freezes when USB pen drive inserted

Hi, My Acer TravelMate's screen fades out and shows vertical colored lines on some parts of the screen and then goes blank when I insert the USB pen drive in. Any ideas what causes it?

What operating system is your laptop and what information do you ahve on the USB drive?

Sounds like the wiring on the pen drive and laptop USB port are different, and drawing down the power on the laptop. Does anything else work in the USB ports? Does the pen drive cause problems in any other computer?

I am using XP and had Debian too (Dual Boot). Same USB stick worked fine before but only now has given me the problem.

PS: I will be on vacation so please dont expect rexponse soon

Try the Pen drive on another computer and see if you get the same result, if so it means that the pen drive is bad, consult manufacturer. if it does work, try another device on the usb port and see if it works.

Thanks for your concern everybody. I sorted it out and the only thing that was causing the trouble was a loose RAM on the bottom of it. It also used to hang up (Screen went blue) when put on lap. I just removed the RAM and reinserted it and WALLAH, its back to normal operation.
I tried the USB flash drive also and it doesn't cause any problem any more. Although I am confused as to how it removed the USB problem since it should only have rectified the lap thing but I am happy its functional again, take care!
