Laptop freezes when opening Microsoft Office documents

The laptop is running Windows XP Home. Ater a tech came & installed a VOIP phone, several things happened:

1. The laptop lost Internet connectivity as well as the ability to connect to shared(mapped) drives on the network.

2. If the laptop is removed from the network (disconnect cables) it freezes when opening any Office document. After a couple minutes, it then frees itself and I am able to continue working. Any ideas, anyone ?

PS. I had to change the ip addresses back to DHCP, as the hard-coded one the tech had setup caused the laptop not to see shares on the network.

1. First off, slap the tech for not testing properly. - Was connectivity restored when you reverted to DHCP? If so, it was probably something like a bad gateway address or bad DNS servers in the static confiuration.

2. If you have mapped drives and try to open a doc from within an app, the app will tootle off and try to browse those mapped drives as if they are local for a few seconds, it can't, so you get the delay. You can prove whether this is the case or not by right clicking the drive mapping and choosing Disconnect (be sure you know where to map it back to afterwards!!) and then trying to open a doc in the same manner as before. If you search either here or at microsofts technet, there are a whole bunch of articles covering this freeze up/timeout issue.

Hope that helped!
