Hello! i need to transfer files from my old pc to my new one and i've bought a parallel laplink cable for this purpose ( a usb laplink cable not being available). i've connected the 2 pcs thru the cable but i don't know how to transfer the files. there's no software associated to the cable. can u please help? i have winxp on both pcs.

Intended to work with a program "laplink" for DOS or a later version "winlink".
Suggest a fast scan of ebay to see if you can get a copy.

Seems to me windows (or dos) had a way to link two computers. you had to set one up as a host and then connect to it. You could Google for file transfer programs. You could also take the drive out of the old computer and temporarly install it in the new one and copy the files between the two drives.

Under 6.22 you had interlnk and intersrv.

If you have network cards in both computers ,why not use a crossover cable .

Under Win95/98 you can use Direct Cable Connection, with file and printer sharing on the "server" and client for Microsoft networks on the "client".

I use Windows 2000 but XP should be exactly the same if not very similar. What you want to do is right-click My Network Places and select properties. Then go to Make New Connection and in the list will be "Connect directly to another computer". Make one a host and the other guest and you should be able to transfer files. If you run into any problems go to Windows Help and type in direct cable connection in the index.

Hello ImpetusEra !

i've tried what u told me to do. i've suceeded in establishing the connection. i've made the pc which has all the files i need as the host and the other one as guest. but now how to access the host from the guest? i looked into help but didn't find anything. when i click on "workgroup computers" nothing is displayed. normally i should be able to see my host's directories, right? but i don't get it. can u tell if ive been wrong somewhere?

Been awhile since I've used DCC over a parallel cable but I think you need to have the computers set in the same workgroup each with a unique host name. Also, you must have something shared such as a folder or the whole drive. If I recall, it is then supposed to pop up a window with the contents of the host computer. If it doesn't bring up the folder you can try opening IE and putting in "//computername/" and that should bring up a window with the shares. You can also go directly to the shared media by putting in "//computername/sharename/". Also, I think the parallel port needs to be set to ECP which can be done in the bios.

Ive finally got it. it was as simple as Click on Start and Run and type //computer/share/. Thanks a lot all u for all ur suggestions and help.
