Hi Guys

Is there a way i can receive and make calls from my laptop by tapping into my landline

i have skype but this doesn't suit my requirements

as i have a couple of lines round the house i was thinking of software that would just centralise the interface

how would i go about this

(i am not looking for a business solution just a convenient home one but understand that there will probably be some expense)

You need a modem to do that, there are many PCMCIA modems out there to use if yours did not include one.

why don't you just plug in a phone?
maybe I don't get the concept of what you are trying but a phone works on a landline then you don't need the conversion into the laptop

I get the gist of what he wants to do, but even if you use the modem to dial from outlook isn't that just doing the dialing? Don't you still need to plug in a regular phone either using a jack splitter or the second port on the modem (if external or it has one) in order to pick up and handle the call? Once the call is dialed is it possible to use a standard headset to have the conversation via the PC? If so, I learned something today that will be useful )

Otlook can use a headset plugged into the mic & headset port on a pc or soundcard.

When I was born I was so suprised I didn't talk for 18 months

Take a look at this article, it may help.

You will need.

An ATA with FXO (and FXS) port
A SIP server.
A Softphone.

You tell the ATA to send the call to the SIP server / PBX (your laptop), using the SIP protocol (aviod h323), over IP
This processes the call and sends it to your softphone as an IP call.

For a basic set up, look at this set up
Get an ATA (cost)
3CX SIP PBX - X-Lite Softphone -
Line--ATA--SIP Server--Softphone--Headset

Fairly easy to use, but you may need a bit of help, but give it a go.

First I'd get the PBX & Softphone and get them working together first.
