We were wondering how can we test how fast the data transmission is on our LAN, transferring files from one computer to another? I think some 3Com cards come with software to test that, that is launched in control panel. We are using other brands of NICs though.

There are two very good, very free testing tools out on the market for testing the throughput capabilities of your network. They are:

QCheck - This is a GUI based tool that will measure the throughput between two devices on your network. You must install QCheck on both devices. The install process starts an endpoint service on each device that is used to transfer the data. The main drawback of this product is that you can only transfer 1 meg of data at a time. It can be downloaded from
Iperf - This is a command line tool that will also test and report on the throughput between two stations. It will transfer more data than QCheck and offers some very interesting and useful command line options. One of my favorites is the ability to test different TCP windowsizes without having to reboot the computers used for the test. It can be found at
On a 100meg network using a switch it is not unreasonable to expect 94 megabits per second between the two devices. If you are using hubs, expect somewhere around 60 megabits per second. On a WAN you should be able to increase the throughput by increasing the TCP Windowsize. A video tip on how to do this can be found on my website.

Happy testing!
