I have noticed the speed drop on my LAN network. I am a novice when it comes to this kind of troublshooting so i was wondering if someone could suggest an easy to use software package to help me find the problem?

My configuration: Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 servers, AD, and Windows XP machines. Cisco PIX box, Cisco routers.

No one else seems to want this, so I will try.

1) I would update the definitions and run full scans of the commercial Anti virus I was using on every Windows box.

2) I would download and run stinger on every Windows box.

3) I would run on every Windows box.

4) I would download and run Adaware SE and Spybot Search & Destroy on every Windows box.

5) I would finally begin to suspect it might not be worm, and start looking at the blinky lights for boxes that are acting funny.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

jimbopalmer, thanks for the input, but what I am really looking for a suggestion on what traffic monitoring software that is easy to use.

Much of the LAN gear is unmanaged, so it has no interface you can get info from. If you are using managed switches, there is hope that the vendor has software to pull that info out of them.

Most routers can be reported on, but most folks are not using routers inside their LAN unless it is quite large or is in multiple buildings. For routers, and most managed switches, I hear good things about but mostly about being free and reliable, not about being easy.

You could try a program such as Ethereal or Lan View to try and see which machines have a lot of traffic. Ethereal is very detailed indeed but can be confusing,

On the Cisco Router, there is a command you can use called 'ip accounting output' to check the usage of the router.

Leave this running for a while and then you can use 'show ip accounting' to see the stats on a per user basis!

nice tip i pickup up from KiscoKid!

At least one of the above should certainly help.

Hi!!I really wish to help, and i'm pretty shure i'd be able to help, but i would need some more infos about your connection. First, let me know if you're using a router. Second, i would need to know which ISP(internet service provider) you re using. If it is possible for you to know, what king of connection your ISP provides you(the most common are:pPPoE, Dhcp and Static.). The last piece of infos would be, wich modem are you using and wich router.
I'm a network technicien, and personnaly I don't believe in softwares for that type of trouble shoooting. They can make things a lot worst. And all these softwares can only do things that you can do. Once i get these informations, I believe that i would be able to provide you the solution for your troubles.

Thanks for the help.

Cisco Router (2610), Cisco PIX, and 3 Cisco switches.

Router has a half T1 WAN frame (Sprint). and DSL from bellsouth that is connected to the PIX box with Static addressing.

6 servers all Windows 2k or 2003, and about 87 workstations.
