Pretty broad question. I assume you mean a LAN with a central server (not peer to peer), in which case:
1) Central file storage and accessibilty
2) Centralized backup. Individual PCs are rarely backed up
3) Shared resources like printers, server hard drive space and Internet connection.
Only downside is the cost for cabling, hubs and the central server.
