k6/2 333, 96MB ram
freebsd 4.5
external nic: dlink 530tx
internal nic: 3com 905b TX (100mbps/full duplex)

Internal nic is connected via crossover to 100baseTX hub
Hub is direct to my local winXP desktop.
WinXP has 1 nic: dlink 530tx (100mbps/full duplex)

QUESTION:
Downloading TO the XP box is great, works at top speed

Uploading FROM the XP box however, doesn't exceed ~330KB/sec

I have no xfer throttling directives anywhere, that i've installed. Server was installed for the umpteenth time yesterday. Only modification was to enable NAT in the kernel. (and in rc.conf of course).

Can't find info about this anywhere. I've found issues with freebsd4.5 and the dlink card, but not the 3com and I can't believe that my external adapter is causing this internal issue.

BTW, running Proftpd 1.2.4 for my server.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

thanks,

Yucky

No ideas? Can anyone point me to somewhere where I might get some info? I've been looking for an answer to this for about 2 weeks, and I'm getting nowhere.

Bueller?

TIA,

Yucky

Sounds more like an XP issue than a FreeBSD one. It might be better for you if you just run Samba on your BSD box, and fool XP into thinking it's talking to another Windows box. -------------------------------------------

Yeah i've been toying with that idea.. Suppose it's just time to bite the bullet and install the port (i looove that option)

I would like to track down the issue for posterity's sake though. Hopefully i'll be able to report back with a proper answer.

thanks for the idea,

Yucky

ive heard rumours about XP making problems of traffic using its default QoS service
Usualy ADSL (where first letter is asymetric) slows uploads
300K/sec might be a problem with duplex setup
eg on FreeBSD netstat -m shows media, and most likely ifconfig rl0 media 100baseTX mediaopt full-duplex helps on FreeBSD-s end and many basic-or-advanced wizards-or-property-sheets on XP-s side

Tough one, but Ill see if I can at least point you the right direction here. I dont know enuf about XP's QoS to bring that up so Ill assume that both XP and Unix along with the nic cards, the hardware and your high speed connection are working fine already.

There is one thing I might suspect may be the issure and worth trying. MTU. If you back up your Unix configuration I would recommend it incase you screw up your system trying stuff.

Ufortunately i cannot find the /proc/sys/net directory or one that would give me the details on specifying parameters to your network configuration.

If you are lucky to find a file that applies to MTU, you may want to check it anyways, the default is 1500 at leat it should be, if its not set it to either 1492 or 1500, and restest your system to see if it still works and the problem was corrected.

If that takes too much time to find. Your high speed connection between your Unix and your Modem is running at 10 mbs, If you can, slow down the nic card connected to the moded mot 10mbps half-duplex, you dont want it autosensing and trying to pick up 100mbps.

The key is either of the two, MTU or too much uneccesary overhead on the primary network card.

good luck....
