LAN connection that is sending packets but not receiving them

How is it possible that a standalone pc can sent out data
but not receive any?

Having wrong cable hooked up...

give us more info, ie. what are you trying to do? what setup are we talking about, ie. PC specs, NIC cards in use, etc...

it is just that a generalized question...if no cable is hooked up how can the pc sent out data ?

By sending it to localhost, a second adapter as in an internal bridge, or the installation of a logical adapter such as the Microsoft loopback adapter.

So the pc is not infact sending out any data but rather just sending it to the LAN port /ethernet adaptor?

Well you can ping 127.0.0.1 and get a reply LOL with no cable plugged in
