LAN and Wifi 1

I have a laptop @ work where I am both wireless and ethernet LAN, 2 different subnets. The wifi is faster than LAN, different isp providers, pipes.

My question is, how do I make my Wifi the default for http browsing? It always takes the LAN as 1st route even though its slower, is there a way to do that?

It is going to depend on the Operating System of the laptop.

Linux
OSX
Vista
Win XP
Win 2000
Win 98
Mac OS9
Etc.

You may be able to do this by adding a route to your routing table. In XP, open a command prompt and type:

route add 0.0.0.0 MASK 0.0.0.0 10.0.0.43 Metric 1 IF 0x2

Obviously, substitute your parameters. For example, 10.0.0.43 is the IP address of the WiFi adapter and IF 0x2 is the physical interface identifier. You can find the adapter number by typing in ROUTE PRINT. It will list your available network adapters.

Thank you for the feedback. The PC with both Wifi and LAN does have both routes already listed and enabled. How do I make one the primary over the other? is there any utility I can use?

You shouldn't need any utility. The above command is basically saying all Internet traffic (0.0.0.0) use this interface (0x2). I forgot to add, you should include -P at the end of the statement to make the route persistent.

You can go change the metric on your wireless interface.

Good point brianinms. Instead of using Automatic Metric on the Interface adapters, set the wireless to 1.

Thank you for the info. How do I simply change the metric for my Wifi internface, and by making it less than my lan interface it becomes the primary, correct?
