I have RH a 7.2 server on my network and when I attempt to telnet to the box there is a lag of about a minute before I get a login prompt. The nic card in the box is a 3com running 100mbps Full Dup. The box is connected to a CISCO switch and my pc on the network is plugged into the same switch.

Are there some files that I need to modify to in the server that would eliminate this lag??

Thanks,
Alain

Hi,

This could be our old friend reverse dns. Try putting an entry in your /etc/hosts on the redhat box equating to the client machine(s). Also make sure /etc/nsswitch.conf does look at /etc/hosts (files) as well as regular dns.

Regards

My /etc/hosts file already had an entry poining to the proper ip. In the /etc/nsswitch.conf there is a line that reads

hosts: files nisplus dns

I think the files remark tells the system to look in the /etc/hosts file first.

Am I right about that or do I need to put the path in its place?

Alain

I've been trying to figure this out. Anyone else have any ideas???

Thanks.

I think that your problem is located in your network cable.
