I have a firewire lacie 80 gig drive which is recognised by XP in Device manager it currently has 2 primary partitions of 10 and 69 gig. I cannot format them with my PC, when I select format it goes off and happily seems to be doing so it gets to 100% thinks for a while then comes back with an error "Cannot complete format" and then appears as a yellow exclamation mark in device manager. I switch the Lacie off and then on again and I can see it in disk management and it says it's healthy and the no. of gigabytes but there is no file format (ntfs or fat32). I can make the partition active so that explorer can see it but it is not possible to format it.

I tried it under command prompt and could see from that that the format did complete but it failed in the "creating file structure" bit

PLEASE has anybody got any ideas I have been successful with this same drive on my pals xp system no problem at all so it is something to do with my set-up.

Many thanks

Hi Colin,

I was wondering if you found a solution to this problem as 2 years on, I have just brought a Lacie firewire 160GB drive and it's doing exactly the same as yours did.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Shellie.

What about a trip to the Lacie website?
Not being rude here, just wondering in print, lol.

colinwhite & shell24,
Do either of you have XP SP2 installed?

There are known issues with SP2 and LaCie has Firmware updates available on their web site that may or may not resolve you issues.

Hi guys,

Yeah I have checked out the website, prior to posting... I have also seen that there are issues with sp2, which i do have installed. Unfortunately this appears to only apply to firewire 800 drives.

The explanations about the necessity of the update dependant on the type of firewire being fairly unclear, I downloaded and checked it out. (I had checked out it wouldn't bugger the drive too)But no luck.

Any further ideas appreciated.

Cheers, Shell.
