I recently replace the motor on my 250gb lacie hard drive. Everything seems to work again although it still makes a few weird sounds on start up. Now the problem is that my mac with 10.4.3 reads for a while and then says that it doesn't recognize the drive and asks if I want to format, ignore, or eject. When I look at my system profile in the firewire area it says that it is reading the lacie 250gb hard drive and gives some other info.

ANY IDEAS???

thanks

You replaced the *motor* on a *hard drive*?

Dude; you're either a hardware genius or your toast - I've never heard of someone repairing a hard disk without destroying the data on it.

While replacing the motor on a hard drive at home is theoretically possible, typically you need clean-room conditions to avoid contaminating the platters.

Depending on the technology used in the drive, as long as you used the same RPM (10,000, 7200, 5400, etc) you should be OK, as any speed differences will be accounted for when the head passes over sector 0 each rotation. A larger concern would be maintaining concentricity -- if the new motor & spindle aren't perfectly concentric to the platters, the heads will not be able to follow the old track information as it wobbles in and out from the hub. :-(

If the data is really important (like several thousand dollars important), you can send it off to one of the drive repair places. But if you've already cracked the seal on the drive, they may refuse to work on it.
