Is it a normal practice to label both ends of an RJ45 to RJ45 patch cord ? If yes, what is the method used ?

I normally would not label the ends of my patch cables. I do label the jacks and patch panels as this is part of the TIA/EIA 606 administrations standards. If you do have a need to label your patch cables I have a label printer made by Panduit (LS7) that does a very nice job.

Hope this helps.

i like to label them I use a write on label system I picked up at ADI there is a white spot to write your number then enough clear to wrap around the cable a few times to protect the number

not sure who the manufacturer is it was one of those point of purchase counter top displays but 3m makes a simalr one but its priced a little higher

I do not label patch cords unless it is going to a unique item. I do have different color patch cords that stand for different things as printer, routers, switches, and 100MB connections. This just makes it easier to know what you have or working on.

I believe the EIA/TIA 606 standards won't allow hand written labels of any type any more, just FYI.

Also, if you are Link Testing it is essential that the patch cord stay in place at the work station outlet. To that point, it might be practical to print and wrap a label on the patch cord with the workstation outlet number on it so that it is an easy check to make sure the correct cord is in place.

We use a brady labeler that lets you print the label, then the clear plastic tail wraps around the wire and over the printed part of the label so it is permanent.

Good Luck!

It is only my opinion, based on my experience and education...I am always willing to learn, educate me!

I do what ssinger1 does. I have different color patch cables for different purposes and can trouble shoot over the phone easily.

I would add, that in a work area where you have a mess of cables coming from a wall plate to a series of desks or cubicles that labelling those may prove to be handy later. As to the method, you can either match the label on the wall plate or make sure each cable has a unique identifier on both ends.

Black Box makes zip tie cable label things that I use alot at work, the part # is 32782 if you are interested. They are expensive though
