I am running SUN EBS / Networker 7.3.2 on my backup system consisting of a server and a autochanger tape system.

But I have problems labelling the tapes I tried both from the Management Console and using the nsrjb
command.

The correct tape seems to be mounted and can be
read (it says there is no label on it) but then the write
operation blocks. There is a process nsrmmd which freezes
with status "D" and cannot be killed even with kill -9. The
only solution to unblock the system is a reboot.

In the daemon.log the following messages are printed after I start the labeling:

02/13/08 09:33:47 nsrd: [Jukebox `QUANTUM@0.0.0', operation
2]. Initiated operation `operation: "Label"; operation
device: "/dev/nst1"; operation response: "prompt"; operation
slots: "20-20"; operation template: "Bar Code Label";
operation volume pool: "Default"; '.
02/13/08 09:33:49 nsrd: /dev/nst1 Eject operation in progress
02/13/08 09:36:08 nsrd: /dev/nst1 Verify label operation in
progress
02/13/08 09:36:23 nsrd: media warning: /dev/nst1 reading:
Success
02/13/08 09:36:23 nsrd: media warning: /dev/nst1 reading: no
tape label found
02/13/08 09:36:24 nsrd: /dev/nst1 Label without mount
operation in progress
02/13/08 10:06:57 nsrd: [Jukebox `QUANTUM@0.0.0', operation
# 2]. Task `OP_LABEL' timed out.
02/13/08 10:06:57 nsrd: [Jukebox `QUANTUM@0.0.0', operation
# 2]. Finished with status: retryable

Afterwards, the status of nsrmmd (I guess one for each drive):
BackupServer:/nsr/logs # ps ax|grep nsrmm

12184 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/nsrmmdbd
12936 ? Sl 0:00 /usr/sbin/nsrmmgd
13281 ? D< 0:00 /usr/sbin/nsrmmd -n 1
13286 ? D< 0:00 /usr/sbin/nsrmmd -n 2

Any ideas of what could be the problem would be appreciated.

Kind regards
MrStig

No straight idea.

With the tape in the drive, bypass the jukebox for now and use nsrmm to label the media. If this is successful, then you got a jukebox problem.

If this does not work, make sure that the drive has been correctly setup and that you can use tools like tar. NW will only use what the OS can do as well.
