A collegue did his ICND part one exam the other day and failed.

However one of the labs he got was to find out what the ip address on the neighbouring router and what was the ip on its ethernet ports.

Any how your were not allowed to use the CDP/ARP/IP Route tables.

How on earth would you get the ip address on the remote router. I understand once you have this you could then telnet into the remote router for the other info.

TheProvider,

Without seeing the question or the lab setup...... from past sims I have had; I would say that the 2 routers are connected to each other by the serial ports and I bet that the subnet mask is /30 meaning that the IP of the connecting link is the next IP!

Example - your serial interface is 192.168.1.1/30 - the other end will be 192.168.1.2.

So I would telnet into the other router with 192.168.1.2 and then do a "show run" on that router for the Ethernet interface infomation etc.

Without all the details - very hard to guess on these questions!

Just a thought!

Exactly right. In fact, I remember that question, and there are only 2 addresses available in a /30 mask, and if they give you one of them, well...

That would now make sense to me. It was genuinely a colleague and not my self. I couldn't understand another way of finding out how the other unit would be connected but not using CDP or looking at the routing tables you wouldnt guess the IP of the remote router.

Thanks.

Well, I thought it was a bit tricky, until it hit me that it's actually not a guess, but there is only one other possible IP address on a ppp link.
