kvm switch (manual)

I have a manual data transfer switch. problem is that when I switch back and forth, the mouse and video switch fine, but the keyboard doesn't unless I unplug the main cable to keyboard and plug it back in, then the keyboard works. This I have to do no matter what computer I'm using. The switch has operated like this since I got it. It gets very frustrating having to do this. Can somebody please help?
