I have set up my first ever Linux box on the company lan.

I've tried to browse out to the web but have been unable to get out.

I went to the proxy settings and entered the i.p. for the proxy server and the correct ports. When I try to browse out I get an error:

"Unknown Authorization Method!"

I am figuring that I need to login to my network somehow so that the proxy server knows who I am. But I can't find anywhere on the linux box to set up that kind of information.

thanks for any help,
Ron

What proxy server do you use ?
Your proxy server got user authentication or not ?
If you configured your browser correctly from linux box.The browser will pop up the dialog box to ask the username and password for proxy server.
Maybe I misunderstood your question.
Good luck

MS Proxy Server 2.0

I decided to try a different browser. I pulled up Netscape, set it up the same way- the very first time I tried to go to a page it gave me a dialog box for a user name and password. I used our network administrator info. It still gives me the same error. After that the dialog box would not come back up.

I tried to use Mozilla but it wont even Run. I get the little mozilla icon next to my mouse pointer for a few seconds and then it goes away.

I may just let this sit a while. It is not critical that the machine be able to access the web. I had just thought it would be nice.

Thank you for your help.

If you are getting that error from Proxy Server, you likely have authentication turned on, and it's attempting to use NTLM authentication, which only IE supports.

Turn off authentication in Proxy Server. If you must have it turned on, you should be able to set it to basic authentication. ______________________________________________________________________

The browsers in modern Linux distributions are SOCKS5 compatible. MS Proxy server 2.0 only supports SOCKS 4.2 so you just cant get this to work.

I'm not sure but i think MS ISA server supports socks5 but that would mean you have to upgrade your proxy server.

I appreciate all the help.

I think I will just need to work around this for now. I just download files on my WINNT machine and then FTP it over to my Linux box.

thanks again,

Ron
