Know any other hybrid dropdown menus that work well?

I have been playing around with this code from a A List Apart article. It seems a little complicated and has lots of fixes in it.

I don't need the image background or the tabs on top. I'd be happy with a main navigation that is words or words in outlined rectangles and a subnavigation menu that looks similar. I do want both menus to be horizontal so as not to cover the content of the page.

Can anyone post a link to something that fits the bill or give me a little direction on how to modify the code from this example.
