I'd like to turn off the "beep" when I hit the escape key in vi. Have tried:

:bl:vb:bel: to /etc/termcap
:bl=:vb=:bel=: to /etc/termcap
trap '^G' befor vi

Trying to avoid the last resort (super glue on the speaker).
Suggestions?

For me vi use terminfo, not termcap.

Hope This Helps, PH.

Thanks.

I did this:

infocmp > file
vi file; [edited out "bel" entry]
tic -v file

viola! no bell

You do realize that ESC only beeps when you have hit it for no reason?

I have seen too many people who have somewhow learned to hit ESC before every command - which causes these beeps. Use ESC to exit from insert mode, not as a preface for every command.

I personally find the beep very comforting - especially when I want to be absolutely certain I've exited an insert or replace.
