Currently our item number in Macola is set up as an 11-digit alphanumeric that has some meaning to our sales and manufacturing departments. Several of our customers have expressed a desire that our part number only be 4-5 numeric digits long. Can I sucessfully add a field in the Item Master that will contain this new shorter number, and then have that number printed on our invoices and shipping/packing lists rather than the existing item numbers in the system, without writing a custom invoice and packing list from scratch? I know there is some flexibility with the layout of the invoices, but can I change a field used altogether?

Thanks.

Yes, just put this in one of the user defined fields, then change your forms accordingly.

When you use the word "key" that implies specific things, particularly to DBAs and programmers, and what I have described above WILL NOT change the key, however you can accomplish what you want to do with striaght out-of-the-box Macola, no mods or programming required.

Another, probably better alternative is to use customer item numbers. You can add a customer's item number tied to your item number and easily print all pick lists, acknowledgements, invoices, etc. using customer item numbers in addition to your item number, or you can print just the customer item numbers for that matter.

One other thing that dgillz didn't mention is that it is usally a good idea to change your Macola searches, so that they include the new field that you are going to use. You can easily do this, as long as you are using Macola on MS SQL Server.
