Keyboard short cuts for different printers?

Hi,

This is an unusual question but I think it is legit, at least for what my friend is trying to do, he has a small office network and a few printers set up. In 2 of the printers he uses two sizes of papers (XP Pro is the OS and the printers are HP Lazerjet 1200 series) there are 2 ways to feed paper, on top of the tray (where he loads standard US letter sixe paper) and within the paper tray, where he uses small size paper (about 6 inches by 9). The reason for this set up is that he uses a medical software which prints 2 differents types of reports, small and normal size.

The way it is now done to choose which size to print is manually by either removing slightly the US letter size paper so the printer will then choose what is in the tray or vice versa by leaving the top paper touching the feeding mecanism which then forces the printer to use that paper.

My idea is to create 2 different printing configuration in the Printer panel but I will still have to move the paper manually. Anyone very familiar with this printer who has some ideas?

Are there keyboard short cuts that one can use to choose which printer to use when more than one printers are available for printing?

Cheers!

You should not have to touch the printer at all. When you go to print you should choose the properties of the printer and select the source of the paper. On my LaserJet 5 it is on the "Paper" tab, :).
As for the shortcut, I would like to know if that is possible to.
Hmm... Just had an idea. Install the printer twice! Just give them a different name. Setup one for the regular paper, and one for the other. That way when you print you just choose which printer. Even though they really are the same.

Hi Jon,

Thanks, this is a really neat idea, I tried it, unfortunately seeems the printer goes to the top of the bac first to check for paper, if there is none, it will go inside the bac, if there is paper in both area, it will always go to the top of the bac, maybe i did not do it right, the idea sounds really cool

What jon said in my opinion should work. If you set up the print properties from the control panel, then it will be set as default. However if you set them up from a program like word or paint shop pro.. those settings will only apply to that document.

Hope that helps

You need to go into that printers properties and set it to use the paper source and other settings like portrait or landscape.
All printers have default configurations. They will look for paper from the manual input then the first tray then the second tray, etc. You have to override the defaults, they should "stick".
