I've read in several different places, that most search engines do not use then any more.
Description seems to still be looked at for results page text but where's KW gone to?
It seems like AltaVista and Inktomi 'look' at them, but nobody really knows if they are being actually used by these search engines. Not sure if others even take kw them into account.

Yeah I agree with you. These days search engines' gives minimum importance to the keyword tag. Description does carry some importance. Most of the SE's algo are now based on link popularity.

The only two search engines that use keywords at this point are Alta Vista and Inktomi.

I disagree. You are looking at this from the view that only large search engines exist.

What about the thousands or hundreds of thousands of smaller engines? These engines send traffic to your site too and you need to consider them as well as the large ones.

I have one site where about 50% of traffic comes from small engines and this is a significant portion of traffic to ignore. You should never look at search engines this way, always look at the broad picture.

Hope this helps Wullie

My focus is on the Major Search Engines and Directories i.e. those that are commercially backed. Definately, never forget about the smaller ones. I agree, it just not my area of expertise. Beth beth@integratedresourcemgmt.com
