Are any of the smaller IP based phone systems capable of providing traditional key system mode (up to 8x24 size)? Key System mode still seems like the right thing to do in a residential installation.

Depends on how deep your pockets are. At this point in time, for residential service, the Key System is probably unbeatable, but give it 2 more years, and just maybe the tables will turn. Just depends on bandwidth. If you are wanting 8x24 capacity in a residence, what are you using for a pipe? Are you cable?, are you DSL,? are you fiber?
Right now, there are quite a few IP based systems trying to get to market, but the voice quality really suuucks, if you are used to good ole dial tone systems, you will be very disappointed. IMHO

depending on what you are trying to do, you may be able to integrate VOIP into your key system. a few vendors make a VOIP Gateway for their proprietary phones and others have standards based gateways to interface analog dial tone. Keep in mind, you are really not using VOIP with an analog gateway, you are simply packetizing voice and transmitting it. Cisco has one I think it is an ATA-186. also Multitech makes a whole line of them. (
good luck...
