Hi,

This is not meant as a stupid question. If you are intending to answer "no" please also include a "however..." ;)

Using JVM on a system other than JavaOS, is it possible to subvert the OS or add hooks?

no, however you might use java and override os-specific binaries like /bin/ls with a shell-command, which starts a java app, which mimics the behaviour of /bin/ls in some parts and replaces others.

However - having such plans other languages would be more useful to do so - on linux: c.
